Our Story
It began with a brewery on the Goolwa Wharf - a place where the river meets the see and tradition meets possibility.
After launching as a craft brewery in 2004, we opened our doors as the Steam Exchange Brewery, armed with a deep love for craft and a determination to make something that mattered. Over the years, brewing traditional ales taught us lessons that would come to define us: the patience of fermentaion, the precision of process, the understanding that true excellence is a pursuit , not a destination.
By 2011, that pursuit led us naturually toward whisky and the Fleurieu Distillery was born. It wasn't a decision made lightly, nor a transition made easily. The journey from beer to whisky demanded more than passion; it called for years of learning, investment and faith in the unseen. It would take until 2013 before our first still was commissioned, and the first spirit lat to rest in oak - a small beginning, but one that carried big dreams.
Today, whisky remains our true north. We are drawn to it because it bridges centuries, carrying with it a timeless craft while inviting constant reinvention. We are inspired by the knowledge that while yesterday's trophies are reflections of past choices, the real work of pursuing excellence happens every day in the quiet moments of care, patience and precision.
Above all else, we are proud to share a spirit born from this small stretch of South Australia - a place rich in character - and see it find its place on the world stage. Each bottle we release carries not just the notes of oak and spirit, but the story of where it came from: Goolwa's edge, our hands and the relentless spirit to create something lasting.
This is whisky forged by patience driven by pride and unmistakably ours.
